What is platelet-rich plasma?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) consists of two components: plasma—the liquid portion of blood—and platelets, a type of blood cell that plays an important role in the body’s healing process. Platelets are well known for their clotting ability, but they also contain growth factors that can stimulate cell reproduction and promote tissue regeneration or healing in the treated area. PRP is simply blood that contains a higher concentration of platelets than normal.
To create PRP, clinicians draw a small sample of the patient’s blood and place it into a device called a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins the blood rapidly, separating its components and concentrating the platelets within the plasma.
What is a PRP injection?
Once platelet-rich plasma has been prepared from the patient’s blood sample, it is injected into a targeted area, such as an injured knee or tendon. In some cases, clinicians use ultrasound guidance to ensure precise placement of the injection. The goal is to increase the concentration of bioproteins—known as growth factors—in the area to help accelerate the healing process.
The exact mechanism behind PRP injections is not fully understood. However, studies suggest that the increased concentration of growth factors in PRP may stimulate or speed up healing, potentially shortening recovery time, reducing pain, and even encouraging hair growth in certain applications.
What is PRP treatment used for?
PRP injections are used to treat a variety of conditions, ranging from musculoskeletal injuries to cosmetic concerns.
Tendon, Ligament, Muscle, and Joint Injuries
PRP injections may help treat several musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. Chronic tendon injuries—such as tennis elbow or jumper’s knee—often take a long time to heal. Adding PRP injections to a treatment plan may help stimulate healing, reduce pain, and allow patients to return to activities sooner.
Post-surgical Healing
PRP was initially used to accelerate healing after jaw and plastic surgeries. Today, post-surgical PRP injections are also used to support healing in muscles, tendons, and ligaments, which often require longer recovery periods.
Osteoarthritis
Early research suggests that PRP injections may help relieve pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis by modifying the joint environment and reducing inflammation. However, research in this area is still evolving.
